Our town

Rye is a unique medieval town with a modern heart located in a beautiful setting close to the sea. The area being considered for the Rye BID includes the ancient Citadel and the immediate environs. The town caters for the sometimes competing priorities of tourists and local residents and faces the challenges of being over busy in the summer when visitors descend on the small town and the quieter winter months. The community has a long history of coming together to make things happen, but there is an overdependence on volunteers and a lack of sustainable funding for projects that could make a real difference to businesses.

A group of businesses have got together to see how the town can be better managed and marketed. These individuals/organisations are giving freely of their time to look at ways in which the town could be improved. They are looking at the introduction of a Business Improvement District (BID), a popular concept aimed at professionally managing a place with sufficient resources and organisation. As part of this they are now starting the work on engaging with the wider business community to see whether a BID would be right.

Potentially the Rye BID will:

Involve 280+ businesses.

Raise £0.5m plus over 5 years to invest in the Town Centre.

Raise our profile further.

Carry out exciting projects and events to drive visits and spend.

Make sure we are a welcoming, friendly and safe place.

Make it easier for people to come into and move around the town.

Access further funding.

Give businesses the support they need to flourish by

driving down business costs whilst being a powerful voice.
